If your friends & family can’t go, plan a solo trip.

This tip comes from a lot of experience. I started solo traveling in 2002 with a trip to France, Belgium, and the Netherlands. I started my travelblog during a solo trip to Cambodia in 2005 and have been blogging solo travel ever since. I also travel with friends & family, but most of my trips have been on my own.

My solo trips around South America have seemed relatively easy because I already speak Spanish. So, for my 40th birthday I decided to learn Portuguese and how to surf. I managed to do both by spending last October in Brazil. Check out my Brazil blogs here.

So how do you get started as a solo traveler?

Say you really want to go to New York (or Peru) but none of your friends or family can go. The idea of going solo used to be radical, but solo travel has become increasingly popular in the past few years and there are now tons of resources for solo travelers.

Here’s a few resources to get you started.

Check out my blogs from twenty of the countries I’ve visited on this page. I haven’t blogged every country I’ve visited, but these will give you a good idea of how I travel alone.

Flashpack curates trips for solo travelers who want group trips with other people who travel solo. I’ve been in groups where everybody else is in a couple or family and it can be a bit awkward at times. If you want to take off on your own and meet others like you, check out Flashpack.
