Hotel Katari is the best place in Arequipa to watch the sunset.
The rooftop bar at Hotel Katari fills up about an hour before sunset, so either make a reservation or get there early. I was lucky to share the last available table with another traveler. The bar has a s/50 minimum for a table on the roof and they also happened to have a special on Arequipa’s own dry gin Boticario. For exactly s/50 we got two drinks. I tried the Gin & Tonic, which comes with star anise and lime. My newfound companion ordered the Berries & Tonic. The service was excellent but unfortunately, I didn’t have time to try any of the food on the menu.
It got cold quickly as the sun went down and I was starting to regret ordering a cold drink when the server appeared with blankets. We both got lots of photos of the alpenglow on Arequipa’s volcanoes and the cathedral as they turned on the lights. It was a lovely evening and something not to be missed on any trip to Arequipa. On my next trip I’ll make a reservation for dinner there.
