Here’s a few events you should plan a trip around in 2026.
These are listed alphabetically by location, rather than date, so you can peruse the places you might want to go next year and then consider when you should go.
Albuquerque, New Mexico: In April 2026 the 43rd and last Gathering of the Nations will take place. Over 800 Nations and tribal groups are expected to gather for this final powwow together. If you can’t make it, check for smaller, regional powwows near you.
Chicago: President Obama’s presidential library, which is more like a museum, will open in spring 2026. Keep an eye on the news for when the opening date is announced. The Route 66 museum in Chicago will celebrate the 100-year anniversary of the iconic highway.
North America: FIFA World Cup Football/Soccer games will be held in Mexico, the US and Canada between June 11 and July 19. If you want to see some of the world’s best athletes, check for a game near you.
Italy: Milan and Cortina will host the Winter Olympics in February and the Paralympics in March. If you want to go and still don’t have tickets, get on that asap.
Jasper, Canada: I visited in 2009 and LOVED Jasper, for many reasons. The town will inaugurate a new train service in 2026. Go in June or July to be one of the first on the luxury “Passage to the Peaks” train.
USA: Birthday parties for the 250th anniversary will be happening in all 50 states. Check for the celebration nearest you or the one that has the most scenic drive to get to and celebrate the US with a classic American road trip.
