Travel Tip 96

disabled travel in Peru

Peru’s rainforest can be more accessible than the mountains because often you’re getting around on boardwalks and by boat.

How to plan travel if you’re disabled?

I’ve wanted to write about traveling with disabilities for a long time, but I’m not an expert. So, I’ve been compiling the best tips from the best experts for months. Here are the top resources from experts on traveling with disabilities.

Top resources for planning accessible travel.

My favorite travel expert who writes about disabilities and accessible travel is Catarina Rivera, on Instagram as Blindish Latina. She wrote an article for Winni rating accessibility in Barcelona, Vienna, Sydney, Amsterdam and Tokyo.

Maayan Ziv founded AccessNow and wrote a fantastic article for Afar on how to redefine accessible travel. Afar has also published articles about a blind safari, deaf travel on Martha’s Vineyard and travel with cerebral palsy.

Tanzila Khan wrote a comprehensive blueprint for how the travel industry needs to change to adequately address the needs of disabled travelers. If you work in travel or advocate for disabled people, this is a must read.

Alex Stratikis is the founder of Autism Adventures Abroad and the best expert I’ve found who advocates for autistic travelers.

TSA disability notification card

Travelers in the US are encouraged to give this to TSA when they enter the screening area.

Disability Rights in the US

In July 2022, the US Department of Transportation made a comprehensive bill of rights for disabled airline passengers. These rights could be changed by the new administration, so check the current rights on the DOT website. Fodor’s published a 2024 update on an expansion of the DOT’s Air Passenger Disability Regulations but so far I haven’t seen anything published on changes for 2025.

Tipon Inca archeological site Cusco Peru

Inca archeological sites are famously full of stairs and difficult for anybody with mobility difficulties.

Cusco is the second least accessible place I’ve lived, after Dhaka, Bangladesh.

The historic center is full of stairs and museums don’t generally have audio guides or other accessible adaptations. However, I am always looking for ways to make Cusco accessible and if you are planning a trip to Cusco and have a disability, please contact me. I’d love to work with you!
