Las Qolqas
Solar panels are just the beginning of the long list of how Las Qolqas is sustainable.
Las Qolqas is the most sustainable place I’ve been in Peru.
It’s also the most peaceful place I’ve found in the Sacred Valley, right next to a river that you can hear from every spot on the property and full of native flowering plants and trees. In just one hour in the morning, sitting by the firepit, I identified 15 species of birds, some of them endemic.
It’s conveniently located just 7 minutes driving from Ollantaytambo, so only about 10 minutes from the train station where you get the train to Machu Picchu. It’s also about 10 minutes to the Ollantaytambo main archeological site, which is extraordinary and a must see.

How sustainable is Las Qolqas?
· Native plants and trees create important habitat for wildlife.
· In three days, I couldn’t find any single-use plastic anywhere on the property.
· All food bought for the kitchen is organic and grown or produced in the Cusco region, limiting its carbon footprint.
Las Qolqas Organic Garden
Many of the vegetables and herbs are grown in the property’s organic garden.
No International Imports
All drinks, including wine and whisky, are made in Peru.
· All dishes can be made vegetarian or vegan.
· At least 80% of staff are hired from local communities.
· All products used in the spa are natural and produced in the Sacred Valley.
· The spa’s sauna and hot tub are heated by locally harvested wood.
· The structures are semi-permanent and can be removed without harming the environment.
· The only permanent structure uses the footprint of the original farmhouse.
· Much of the electricity is from the property’s solar panels.
· All hardwood is reclaimed from trees that fall naturally in the rainforest; none of the wood comes from deforestation in the Amazon.
