Surfing Huanchaco

Surfing Huanchaco Trujillo Peru

Huanchaco is great for surfers of all levels and ages!

Beginners (like me) and experts (like the ones I met at a surfing competition) all have options in Huanchaco.

Every month or two, there is a surfing competition in Huanchaco. If you want to see or participate in a surfing competition, contact Fernando at surfnano@yahoo.com to ask about dates.

One of the reasons Huanchaco is so famous in surfing circles is that the waves are consistent all year. Most surfing destinations are great a few months out of the year but not so good the rest of the year. The photos above are all from the surfing competition at El Boquerón, Huanchaco’s beach with the biggest waves.

Caballito de totora

Long before people brought modern surfboards to Huanchaco, people used the caballito de totora for fishing and surfing. Read more about the caballito on last week’s blog.

There are about a dozen surf schools and surf shops in Huanchaco. It’s an impressive number for such a small town.

How to get there?

Fly to the Trujillo airport, which is a 5 minute taxi from Huanchaco. It takes almost half an hour to get from the Trujillo airport to the city of Trujillo. If you want to visit both, it’s easier and more fun to stay in Huanchaco and visit the city.
