Cusco, Peru
The Imperial City of the Incas is a world-class tourist destination with many fabulous restaurants and cafés. Below are just a few of my favorites where I eat frequently.
Cicciolina Restaurant
Cicciolina is the best Italian-Peruvian restaurant in Cusco. While most dishes are Italian, many ingredients and flavors are distinctly Peruvian. This is the best place for tapas in Cusco and I recommend reservations for dinner.
Carpe Diem
Carpe Diem has the best freshly made pasta in Cusco. This is also the place for a very authentic tiramisu, made at your table.
Sakana Cevisushi
Sakana Cevisushi has the best ceviche in Cusco’s San Blas neighborhood. It also has excellent Peruvian sushi.
Xapiri Ground
Xapiri has the best hot chocolate in Cusco but is so much more than a café. It is also a venue for art exhibits, community space and sells art from the Peruvian Amazon.
Rúcula Restaurant
Rúcula has some fancy versions of Peruvian basics, with good vegetarian options.
Café d’Wasi
With two locations in Cusco, Café d’Wasi serves fantastic coffee with a wide variety of brewing methods: Aeropress, Chemex, French Press, Siphon and more.
Sushimura Cevisushi
Sushimura has great Peruvian sushi, which looks like Japanese sushi but has Peruvian flavors. This is also one of the best cevicherías in Cusco's San Blas neighborhood.
Jack’s Café
Jack’s Café is the place to go for hearty portions of Australian and American favorites. Even better, they serve breakfast all day!
La Valeriana
The Valeriana Bake Shop has excellent cakes, cupcakes and pastries. Both locations in Cusco are comfortable and stylish.
Calle del Medio
One of the best restaurants on Cusco’s Plaza de Armas, with beautiful views across the plaza and up to the Inca ruins of Sacsayhuaman.
Yaku: Cocina de Altura
Recently expanded, Yaku is on the Plaza Regocijo. It has an extensive menu and good service.
Abra Bistro de Altura
Conveniently across the street from the Marriott, Abra Bistro has excellent trout and pastas in a stylish setting.
El Refugio
Tucked in the back of a small courtyard, El Refugio has fantastic views of Cusco, delicious food and an elegant atmosphere.
Barra Ceviche
Hard to find, yet definitely worth the effort. This ceviche bar in Cusco’s Magesterio neighborhood is a gem.
